How to Break Down Your 2025 Plan to Achieve Great Things

When it comes to tackling your biggest goals for 2025, the secret isn’t about dreaming bigger—it’s about planning smarter. Grand visions don’t come to life overnight. They’re built step by step, brick by brick, with intentionality and calculated effort.

Take it from me, someone in the trenches of a big 2025 goal: writing and publishing a book.

At first, it felt as simple as “just sit down and write,” but the truth? It’s a beast. You’ve got to understand your audience, craft your message, refine your manuscript, navigate the labyrinth of editing, and develop a full-blown marketing plan—all at the same time. Overwhelming? You bet. Achievable? Absolutely, with the power of small, calculated steps.

Here are 5 steps for breaking down your 2025 goals.

1.Clarify the VisionStart with the big picture. Whether it’s launching a new product, growing a team, or writing your own book, begin by asking: What’s the ultimate purpose? Who is this for?

I started by asking, “Who am I writing this for?” My audience isn’t just anyone; it’s people who need specific insights, who have struggles I can solve. The more clarity I have about them, the more impactful my writing becomes.

Your vision is the cornerstone of your plan. It gives you focus, eliminating distractions that pull you in too many directions. Without a clear vision, it’s easy to fall into the trap of “doing for the sake of doing.” But with purpose as your compass, you can prioritize the work that truly matters.

Clarity also ensures you don’t waste time or resources on tasks that don’t move the needle. It’s not about writing more words or doing more work. It’s about writing the right words and doing the right work to reach the people who need it most.

Whether your goal is to inspire, educate, entertain, or solve problems, your intended audience should be the anchor that holds your vision steady.

2.Chunk It Out

Breaking down a big goal into smaller chunks is about ensuring nothing gets missed and every step aligns with the end vision. For me, writing a book isn’t “write a chapter today.” It’s breaking it further: sections, teaching points, stories—all neatly scheduled into my calendar.

Think about construction: you don’t just yell, “Build me a skyscraper!” There are phases—engineering, mobilization, structural work, inspections. Even down to something as specific as, “The electrician is coming Tuesday at 2 PM.” Big goals, like books or business milestones, require the same mindset.

My book goal can be chunked into three major phases:

  1. Writing: Create the manuscript by February.

  2. Editing: Leverage experts to refine.

  3. Publishing & Marketing: Develop a strategy that works across social platforms, podcasts, and live events.

Within each phase, there are bite-sized tasks. Writing doesn’t mean “write all day.” It means writing one story or teaching point per session. Marketing doesn’t mean “launch everywhere at once.” It means creating a phased strategy that will launch in pieces that ultimately contribute to your ultimate goal.

Breaking your goals into manageable phases and tasks transforms the overwhelming into the achievable, allowing you to make steady, meaningful progress toward your ultimate vision.

3.Lean on Tools and TeamsUse tools like a color-coded calendar, project management software, or even sticky notes. Keep progress visible and adjust as needed.

Don’t go at it alone. Involve your team, mentors, or even a class to gain insights and streamline the process.

My calendar is color-coded to distinguish milestones (big goals) from smaller tasks. I track progress monthly, reassess weekly, and adjust daily if burnout creeps in. But tools only go so far. My team and colleagues are my secret weapons. They provide feedback, expertise, and lessons learned from their own journeys.

If you’re a leader with big goals, don’t just dictate the plan. Bring your team into the conversation. Ensure they understand the vision, their role in it, and that they genuinely buy in. You might even discover ideas or perspectives you hadn’t considered.

Remember: greatness is never achieved in a vacuum. Lean on your team. Learn from others. And don’t be afraid to adjust the plan if needed.

4.Prepare for BurnoutBurnout is real and it doesn’t always announce itself with a neon sign. It sneaks up on you when your to-do list feels endless, when deadlines collide, or when you forget to pause and breathe. That’s why preparation is non-negotiable.

For me, avoiding burnout starts with setting manageable daily goals. It’s not about cramming as much as possible into a day but focusing on what truly matters. I prioritize tasks that align with my end vision and break them into chunks I can realistically handle.

Checking in with myself is also crucial. How’s my energy today? Am I pushing through exhaustion, or do I feel in flow? If something feels off, I pause and assess. Sometimes that means redistributing tasks—what can wait, what can I delegate, and what needs my immediate attention?

But here’s the trick: burnout often happens because we undervalue the small wins. We get so laser-focused on the finish line that we forget to celebrate the steps along the way. Crossing off a task, even a minor one, is proof of progress. It’s momentum in action. Relish it. Feel good about it. Let it remind you why you started in the first place.

Why Small Steps Win Big Battles

Big goals aren’t for the faint of heart, but they’re absolutely achievable when you take small, calculated steps. Whether you’re writing a book, building a business, or leading a team to a bold vision, the same principle applies: break it down, plan it out, and execute with intention.

So, what’s your big 2025 goal? And more importantly, what small step will you take today to make it happen?
